I became an oral historian in order to preserve the stories of the Tuskegee Airmen wives. Many books and several films have been made about the Tuskegee Airmen, but rarely are their wives mentioned. The 60-plus oral history interviews collected by this project will be transformed into a book that will be available to the general public.
Experience
I began my current project a few decades ago, immediately after submitting my doctoral dissertation for review. The project began with the support and cooperation of the local Tuskegee Airmen Wives organization as well as the local chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. I earned a certificate from the Charles T. Morrissey Oral History Workshop, Vermont College and began interviewing wives soon thereafter. More than 60 oral history interviews were conducted, at least 50 by me personally. The project is now in the book-writing phase and should be successfully concluded soon.
